A really Great tool for technical ice AND alpine mountaineering. The bend in the shaft is not so radical that it inhibits plunging in softer snow slopes. The rubber grip does not protrude from the O.D. of the shaft so does not interfere with plunging. Balance is superb with enough head weight to penetrate easily. Pick is well designed though on long mixed alpine routes (multiday) you may want a backup pick in case of breakage. The little plastic hole covers in the shaft WILL be lost so just ignore it. Best tool I have used on mixed routes.

Update 2007: Tool is no longer made having been replaced by the Aztar. You may still occasionally see them for sale tho and replacement picks are still available if you search. I'm still using this tool in the alpine as I really love it, tho now using different technical ice tools.

I have really dished out some punishment to my Axar and it has held up very well. The yellow paint does not chip easily or flake off like some other tools after they've been put through the ringer. If you like straight-shaft tools this is a good one.

Ultimate tool for alpine/mixed/steep WI climbs. The clearence Rocks for hooking, provided you have the pick pictured (not the 4x4 pick- it doesn't have teeth all the way to the shaft). The adze cams well for mixing things up and is also easy on the palm when self belaying up steep snow. Good leash system. Even better snap-on leash system when pared with leashless retrofitting (a cut "thimble" and two hose clamps). Best tool I've used. Light enough for me!

I love my Axar. I use it with my Quasar for ice and alpine. Too bad they don't make it anymore. I only have 1 more pick that fits it, then it's over. I also love the leash system where you have to use your teeth. I guess I'm so used to it, or maybe I just love the taste...
