Reviews | caltrop | Untitled Review | | Voted 3/5 | Great for trip planning though not detailed as quads are. The graphics are great. The routes are easy to plot. You can add your own notes to the map. The nicest thing about the routing is that you can profile it and see the elevation changes.
I have v3 which has bugs to say the least. Everyone raved so about this product but it has its' problems.
1) does not print the route directions correctly - comes out all zero's
2) very few keyboard commands and the ones it has are hard to use
3) loading all data to the HD - difficult to switch between regions
4) file management is a little unwieldy
5) NO SAVE ALL - there are saves scattered around the different areas. It does save when exiting or switching map folio files (the main file).
Overall this software as with other DeLorme software looks cobbled together but it does manage to function somehow.
Maybe v4 is a little better...don't expect product support as with most software companies. | | Posted Aug 9, 2003 5:06 pm | | grandwazoo | Untitled Review
Voted 4/5 | I've been using this software and many others for years and find this to work good for high level work or hooking the gps up to a laptop while driving in remote areas. I use this software more for putting together road bike training routes than for hiking. | | Posted Dec 10, 2003 9:30 pm | | Larry V | Untitled Review
Voted 2/5 | I used Delorme Topo USA version 4.0. This product has some very cool graphics features, when they work, but I was very disappointed in the quality of the package overall. I will no longer use it. I have read reviews of version 5.0 and it apparently is not much better.
Positives: Covers entire U.S., with roads as well as topographic information.
Negatives: Dismal installation program. It sent me on an extended hunt to figure out if I already had DirectX installed on the computer, and if so, what version of it. The software doesn't necessarily work after installation. Difficult to use, at best. Requires you to read lengthy caveats, work-arounds, and operational instructions in text files that come with the software. Full of bugs. The map images themselves are of inferior quality, compared to Topo! products. Much less readable and reliable, I would say. I would not recommend this package to anyone.
Read reviews on Amazon.com before investing much money in this product. I tried this software on Window NT and Windows XP. It worked better on NT. | | Posted Sep 11, 2005 9:01 pm | | tarol | Untitled Review
Voted 4/5 | I use DeLorme Topo 4.0 all the time. I love the 3-D view feature! It was pretty easy and intuitive to learn. Only had trouble when I was learning how to save maps to a file. | | Posted Feb 9, 2006 5:26 pm |
