A short gaiter is just the ticket when you need to keep twigs, scree, or snow out of the top of your boot. These have become a favorite among hikers on the Pacific Crest and Appalachian trails. Outdoor Research chose uncoated packcloth as the fabric so that vapor permeability is high, and elastic at the top and bottom for a snug fit over the boot top and around the leg. A Velcro front closure makes it especially easy to work with.

Voted 5/5 | Agree with mtntrail2: these should be a staple for any extended backpacking trip. Perfect as a pure scree gaiter. Compact, light, and well-designed. Also good for a limited amount of snow hiking, say June conditions in the Sierra.
When looking for a snow gaiter, you have to weigh water-proofness versus breathability. I have a pair of OR full-length gore-tex gaiters. Indeed they are waterproof. However, internal condensation is considerable in most cases. Unless it's cold and extremely wet outside, you'll likely end up pretty wet under the gaiter.
These gaiters nicely balance waterproofness and breathability. Water resistant in the odd snow patch, or even in a short submersal in a stream. | | Posted Jan 1, 2003 9:51 am |
