Product Description

From the Olympus website:

"The camera that redefines tough. The Stylus 1030 SW is one tough camera. The Shockproof, Waterproof, Freezeproof and Dustproof design gives active people the confidence to take this camera anywhere and shoot in nearly any condition. Plus, the wide-angle lens lets users capture more of what they see. Great for divers, surfers, rafters, skiers and anyone with an active lifestyle."

Available in a few nice colors. Pick green, because I said so.

I'll get back to you as to whether this is the ideal alpinist-camera, since I tend to break cameras, though I do take good care of them. This is THE toughest camera I've ever held, owned, used, etc. I have filmed underwater with it in streams without issue. I have yet to drop it, sleep with it between me and a sharp pointy rock, take it out in cold weather (aside form cold water for all of 5 minutes), have a very fat person sit upon it, etc, but feel confident that it can take the typical punishment our hobbies dish out to our cameras.

Tips

To be updated as time passes...

-Tapping is heard during video playback. This is caused by the lanyard tapping the metal sides of the camera. One should take special care to avoid having the lanyard (mostly the plastic section that joins it all together) contact the body. I am planning on replacing the lanyard with some thin diameter cordage.

-This camera isn't designed to survive use in water, but is designed to be used in water. Enjoy accordingly.

This camera kicks insane amounts of ass so far. I go through a camera every year and a half or so, with the last being a Fuji, a Sony before that, another Fuji before. I don't recall what was before that, and before that, etc etc, but this one feels promising.
