Look…there under that huge pile of saddles and hats…it seems to be the hood of a car. Oh no. It’s the Packard. It’s the 12-cylinder Packard convertible somebody (Emily?) once drove across the country. The doors are locked.
…but inside the car seems to be stuffed with old clocks, framed oil paintings, a leopard skin, books, boots, brass fishing reels, stamp albums…
You can’t take it all in. At the other end of the barn you notice a marble table, a beautiful slim-wheeled two-seat carriage, a stack of a dozen carved chairs, a leather trunk…it’s all too much at once…
You trip on something. What is it? A small backpack of some kind. You lift it by its shoulder straps. It has old European hotel stickers on it. You grab it and practically run…you’ll come back to the barn some other time…
In broad daylight you examine it. A beautiful, mellow Black Diamond L33 Speed pack. (That’s what they used to call them.) Rather defiantly and ruggedly old-fashioned looking. Strong enough to go down the Nile, across the Alps, through the Canal, over the oceans, but still small enough to carry aboard a plane. A thing like this would cost a fortune these days…
L33 Speed. Gray/orange ripstop nylon, handsome but meant to be abused. Plastic buckles throughout. Water proof. Big enough to swallow a lot, but not too big Price: $98.

Voted 5/5 | Just what I've been looking for. A minimalists pack but with all the essentials to get you by in the alpine realm. Rope strap beneath the lid, super light-weight and water proof shell, ice screw clips on the belt, hydration bladder compatible and easily removable waist belt. The compression straps on the side handle big items up to MSR snowshoes etc.
What I don't like: The ice tool straps in a word, suck. While climbing the Bell Cord Couloir on the Maroon Bells this summer, as I was on the approach, my ice axe fell out and bounced down the slope a bit. Also, since they're bungee cord, they seem kinda flimsy. If you have a long ice axe in the 70cm range, you'll have to stretch the hell out of them to get the axe in. Voted 5/5 | Excellent handling pack for such a low weight.
the removable framesheet allows me to roll this pack up to haul it to camp until summit day.
Just a great design that does what is intended to do very well.
