Product Description

The straight shaft version of the BD X-15 ice tool works great for alpine routes, some low grade mixed and waterfall ice up to WI3 or 4. They are made up of aluminum and come with a variety of picks: Classic, Alaska, Laser which can be interchanged easily via one hexnut without having to use tools. Just use the blade from one to unscrew the others hex-nut!

Rubber grip provides optimal control in handling.

Caveat

Black Diamond no longer manufactures or produces these tools, so you'll have to search eBay or other such sites. Garage sales may be a good place to look as well.

I've used mine on WI3 and steep snow so far and they work pretty well. I had a bit of trouble climbing ice over buldges, since the shafts are straight (knuckles hit ice), but on pure vert they work fine. A bit heavy though compared to the newest generation of ice tools.
